Mustang is one of the most fascinating and picturesque places in Nepal and is understandably popular among trekkers, many of whom walk to Lo Manthang. Mustang is probably a Nepali mispronunciation of the original name of the capital of Lo, an almost mythical kingdom. Trekkers are allowed to visit the area although an additional fee is charged. Bishnu has trekked regularly in this area.
Officially, Mustang is the name of the entire district along the Kali Gandaki River from the Tibetan border to Ghasa. Jomsom is the headquarters of the Mustang district. The restricted area of Tibetan influence is north of Kagbeni, and this place is referred to as Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is a fabulous village of Tibetan style swellings and cobbled streets. You get great views up into Mustang and towards the direction of the Thorong La Pass. The mighty Nilgiri range dominates the skyline as you look south. The area has witnessed significant cultural, economic, and environmental changes over the years despite the area north of Kagbeni being protected as a restricted site.
Our trek to Upper Mustang starts in Jomosom after the spectacular flight from Pokhara. We leave as early as we can for this one and head off from Jomosom on arrival. We pass through extraordinary barren, but sparsely beautiful landscape, at times somewhat exposed to the elements. For all sorts of reasons, a trek in Mustang would be a journey to remember.

Nepal has been on my bucket list for a long time. When a friend asked me if I would like to join her trekking and camping group, I jumped at the opportunity. I found out that the trail would be low level and will be below the Himalayan base camp.
The Himalayan Sunrise Trekking & Expedition company provided excellent services throughout the 10 day trek.
The guides are knowledgeable and very aware of the trekkers' needs and comfort. The owner Bishnu is particularly flexible in accommodating unforeseen circumstances. One trekker in the group had an injured knee yet she still wanted to participate in the trek. Bishnu hired a horse and its handler to assist her mobility!
The food was delicious and plentiful enough to satisfy the hungriest of stomachs after a long day of trekking.
Bishnu was also conscious of the campsite security. He had his team conduct rounds through the night. The special touch I most appreciated was the provision of a warm, wet face cloth after a long trek - how very refreshing!
This was my first experience in trekking. I found all the guides were very helpful and anticipatory. One of them was always walking by my side, to assist me when I needed a hand. I was very grateful.
It was an amazing experience to see the Himalayas first hand and to meet the cheerful Nepalese.
I give this tour company a 5 STARS rating.
